Restless Minds, Restless Kids – CPD DVD Session

Scheduled viewing: 03 June in Cape Town and 07 October in Johannesburg

By C. Keith Conners, Ph.D, and John S. March, M.D.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed neurobehavioral problem in childhood and adolescence.  Experts estimate that as many as 1 in 10 American youngsters may have symptoms sever enough to impair normal social and academic development.  Untreated, ADHD can lead to school or vocational difficulties, substance abuse, antisocial behaviors or significant psychological disabilities.  Despite it’s classification by the American Psychiatric Association as a research-based neuropsychiatric disorder, public and professional controversy surrounds ADHD, especially regarding how often and by whom it is diagnosed and treated with medications.

In Restless Minds, Restless Kids, Dr. C Keith Conners and Dr. John S. March, two leading specialists in the field of childhood behavioural disorders, discuss the state-of the art approach to diagnosing and treating ADHD.  They are joined by four mothers of ADHD-affected children who share their experiences with the effects of this disorder on family life.

C. Keith Conners, Ph.D., is professor of medical psychology at Duke University Medical Center. The author of numerous professional publications, Dr. Conners has been a leader in ADHD research for three decades. The Conners’ Rating Scales-Revised are established standard measures of ADHD symptoms.

John S. March, M.D., is director of the pediatric psychopharmacology and anxiety disorders programs at Duke University Medical Center. His contributions to the scientific literature on drug treatment of childhood psychiatric disorders are numerous. Dr. March is a recent recipient of the Charlotte Norbert Reiger Award for scientific research given by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Producer and narrator Rick D’Alli, M.D., is assistant professor of psychiatry at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He was formerly a reporter and executive producer for the PBS television affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona.
