• What is the programme format?

The program contains ten modules:

1. Career development counselling and assessment

2. Holland’s RIASEC theory of personality types and work environments

3. Components of the Strong Profile

4. Profile interpretability

5. Descriptive statistics and sampling

6. The General Occupational Themes and the Basic Interest Scales

7. The Occupational Scales

8. Technical integrity of the scales – reliability and validity

9. The Personal Style Scales

10. Interpretation challenges, ethics, and cross-cultural implications

The programme includes brief interactive assignments, a quiz at the end of each module, and a culminating interpretation activity.

• How long does it take to complete the programme?

The programme is designed to take approximately 30-35 hours. It is self-paced. Some participants are able to complete it over a weekend; others take the full 35 hours.

• Is there a deadline for completion?

We ask you to finish the programme within 90 days of your programme start so that you are building on previous learning and not having to re-learn every time you pick it up. The on line learning platform that we use will automatically drop anyone who does not complete the ten quizzes within 90 days. You may be reinstated for one 30-day extension. There is a $125 fee for programme reinstatement.

• How much computer knowledge is necessary?

You need to be able to turn your computer on and off, access Microsoft Explorer, and download Acrobat Reader and Flash – all free. The rest is learn as you go. You will be clicking on links to respond to questions and view presentations, submitting assignments in ordinary word processing, and interacting with the instructor and other participants via email and virtual classroom settings. We chose Blackboard as the platform because it is easy and straightforward. Fewer bells and whistles, more speed.

• How do I get feedback on my work?

You will receive immediate feedback on your quizzes, and feedback by email as you submit your answers to the questions in the modules. Instructors are also available by phone.

• Can I contact others in the programme?

Participants who wish to do so can have their own personal web pages in Blackboard and be listed on a programme roster. We also schedule virtual classrooms, webinars, and discussion groups where participants get together with the instructor.

• How much is the programme

The cost is R5 800 (includes VAT) – please note that this amount may be subject to fluctuations in the exchange rate.

• How do I register?

Contact Shadi (email shadi@jvrafrica.co.za or call 011 781 3705) to complete a registration form.

• What is the refund policy?

Your full programme registration fee will be refunded if you have not started the programme. Once you are registered in Blackboard, your registration fee will be refunded less a $125 administrative fee. We cannot give refunds once your Strong assessment has been completed.

• What happens if I fail?

It doesn’t happen, we’re happy to say! If you don’t complete the programme, all that happens is that we don’t send your certification status to the publisher. If you struggle with the quizzes at the end of the modules, we ask you to try again . . . and again, until you pass them.

• How do others like the programme? Who does best with this format?

Most like it, although we all miss the in-person interaction of public and on-site groups. We’ve noticed that because of the one-to-one interaction between instructors and participants in the distance learning format, content mastery is higher. Those who do the best set specific goals and timelines for themselves and follow them.

Author: Zia Attlee

Traffic Psychology is a relatively new field of study. Human behaviour is known to be a complex field of study. Human behaviour whilst driving a car, riding a bicycle or even crossing the road, well that is a complex field of study on its own.

People act differently once they’re behind the wheel of a car, and according to Vanderbilt (2008) this can be attributed to the anonymity that a car provides us. The car provides a “shield”, a form of “protection”. No wonder you often see people react in a more outspoken way than what they would when walking down the street. You’re not likely to see people throw their hands in the air, showing hand signals, shouting at the top of their voices whilst walking in a shopping centre – no – people are more composed, they are adapting to more socially acceptable behaviour. But it takes you only an hour in rush hour traffic, and you are highly likely to see at least one person succumbing to what we call road rage.

To be honest we have all reacted in inappropriate ways when stuck in traffic and truth be told traffic is not something new. Traffic and traffic problems have been around even in ancient Roman times, and interestingly enough in 1720 the leading cause of death, in London, was due to horse carts and coaches being driven recklessly (Vanderbilt, 2008).

The situation in the modern world is not much different – The World Health Organization predicts that road fatalities will rise to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030 (World Health Organization, 2009). By looking at the statistics of road accidents and the costs of fatal crashes to our country, it is clear that South Africa is in dire need of a “new vision” or even “solution” to our traffic problems.

On an international level, traffic psychology has provided much needed information to various stakeholders to improve traffic problems. Topics such as:

•	driver perception and cognition,
•	medical fitness for driving,
•	attitudes and behaviour of drivers,
•	the state of the driver (stressed, fatigued, provoked),
•	personality of the driver,
•	training of the driver,
•	traffic law enforcement,

to name but a few, are all topics of importance that fall under the umbrella of traffic psychology (Groeger & Rothengatter, 1998).

So what is South Africa’s vision with regards to our own traffic problems? Yes, there are government organisations that work hard on developing new strategies and new campaigns to combat our road accident rates, but how can we, the general public, corporate companies and especially psychologists assist in making our roads a safer place?

Join us at our first Traffic Forum, on 29 April 2010 from 14:00 – 16:00, and learn more about the fascinating field of traffic psychology and help brainstorm around a vision, stemming from the realm of traffic psychology, that we can work towards to combat our current traffic problems. Themes that may be discussed include better driving training; better selection techniques; possible research fields; the role of traffic safety education at a school level; and many more. This forum aims to create a think tank to tackle specific areas that our discipline can have an impact on.

RSVP with Shadi@jvrafrica.co.za or call 011-781 3705 to book your place.

In order for an organisation to fulfill its purpose it requires that employees, managers, and leaders all perform a particular function which needs to be achieved through people and with people. A number of factors can be attributed to success in life but to cope with the demands of such a highly complex environment such as in business, having a good understanding of ourselves as well as others and the ability to effectively manage our interactions provides us with a solid foundation for our relationships. Having the appropriate skills to interact successfully with others will for the most part ensure that those goals outlined by the organisation can be achieved effectively. In fact, research verifies that increased Emotional and Social Skills (ESS) can improve an employee’s level of performance, their ability to collaboratively resolve conflict, and their ability to manage stress effectively. Also increased levels of ESS can improve general health and well-being. In addition, enhanced ESS improves management effectiveness, leadership ability and generally organisantional performance.

The purpose of the participative group discussion is to:

Explore current trends and themes in ESS and the development thereof.

Facilitate a session whereby participants partake in a sense-making session where we have the opportunity to tap into the expertise of participants leveraging off of their specific knowledge base and application settings.

identify opportunities for enhancement and development of the existing knowledge base

Generally, the idea is to create a platform where interested parties can share their experiences, views, new ideas, research and developments in the field. The forum is open to anyone with an interest in this area and this forum is the first of hopefully many such occasions.

Agenda

Welcome and introduction

Explore trends and themes in research and development

Topics to be discussed in the participant discussion forum include:

What has worked and what has not worked in the field of ESS

Case studies in the field of ESS

The efficacy of training interventions

Explore and refine themes for a business case

Participants attending the discussion will be requested to complete a brief questionnaire prior to the session regarding their experience with and perceptions of ESS.

Despite the huge volumes of research done on leadership, the research on management derailment is relatively new. When managers fail, it costs much in the sense of resources to recruit, select and train replacements; but this is the best case scenario. Often the hidden costs account for greater losses: missed business opportunities, unfinished projects, and decimated morale amongst those who remain behind.

The reality is that not only managers and leaders derail; stressors leading to derailment behavior are not limited to the realm of management, and often those in specialist positions or still climbing the corporate ladder derail – perhaps not as publicly, but with no less serious consequences. The behavioral implications do not only derail these individuals from success in their careers and relationships, but also pose significant risk for organizations, from fraud and other financial losses to reputational problems and poor team performance.

JvR has formed a Derailment in the Workplace Forum aimed at highlighting derailment behavior in the South African workplace. Our idea is to organise opportunities where interested parties can get together and share new ideas, research and developments in the field. The forum is open to anyone with an interest in this area and this meeting is the first of hopefully many such occasions.

Welcome and introduction

Defining derailment

Occurrence in South Africa

Case studies

Participants attending the discussion will be requested to complete a brief questionnaire prior to the session regarding their ideas and suggestions around development in this field.
